Drug uses
Plavix is an antiplatelet agent. It is used to reduce the risk of stroke or heart attack in patients with atherosclerosis. The medication may also be used to treat other conditions.
Before using
You may need additional monitoring of your dose or condition in case you are using such drugs as heparin, fluvastatin, tamoxifen, torsemide, ibuprofen or naproxen (nsaids), phenytoin, tolbutamide, warfarin.
Inform your doctor beforehand of all the medicines, you are taking, including over-the-counter medicine. Inform your doctor if you are pregnant or breast-feeding or if you have a history of an allergy.
You should be aware that use of this medicine is not recommended in case you have a history of clotting disorders or ulcers or gastrointestinal bleeding.
Directions
Follow your doctor's directions and recommendations for using this drug. You can take the medicine as it is comfortable for you: with food or on an empty stomach. The medication should be stored at room temperature, away from heat, light and moisture. Keep out of reach of children and pets.
In case you miss a dose of Plavix, take it as soon as possible. However, if it is almost the time for your next dose, skip the missed one. Do not double the dose.
Warnings/ Precautions
Inform your doctor if you are taking aspirin or clopidogrel. These medicines if taken together with Plavix may cause some interactions.
Inform you doctor or dentist you are taking this medicine before you have any medical or dental treatments, surgery or emergency care.
Check with your doctor before you start taking any other medicine, including over-the-counter drugs. Stay away from any sports that expose you to risk of serious injury.
Do not breast-feed. It is still unknown whether Plavix is excreted in breast milk.
Possible side effects
The most common side effects include indigestion or diarrhea. But if you experience bleeding from gums when brushing teeth; change in vision; rash; sore throat or fever; sudden, severe, persistent headache; seizures; discoloration of urine or stool; black, tarry stools; nosebleeds; weakness; itching; speech problems; yellowing of the skin or eyes; or pale skin; excessive bleeding from cuts; increased menstrual bleeding; unexplained vaginal bleeding; unusual bruising inform your doctor immediately.
Contact your doctor if you experience side effects other than listed above.
Overdose
If you think, you have overdosed, contact an emergency immediately.
Additional information
You mustn't share the medication with others for whom it wasn’t prescribed. Do not use Plavix to treat other health conditions.
Drug interactions
Plavix may cause some interactions which can result in unwanted side effects or prevent a medicine from doing its job. Inform your doctor of all prescription and over-the-counter medicine that you are taking.
